“You’re Looking Too Thin”

“You’re looking too thin.” Is what some people have been telling me lately. And even though I know they care, their comments are becoming a tad much.

A little over a year ago I was getting a check up and was told that my weight was slightly more than what it should be. Well, that did hit home because at the time, I had been feeling rather sluggish and unmotivated. But when the nurse practitioner said that, I did listen. So, I started eliminating certain foods that I knew weren’t of the right choice. I began eating healthier, choosing fresh produce rather than processed. Incorporating more fruits and veggies into what I eat on a daily basis. No more pop tarts, chips and things like that. Now, I do still like to eat the occasional cookie (or two… lol). Just a few days ago I baked some homemade peanut butter cookies that were out of this world! YUM!!! And yes, I still eat pizza every once in a while, indulge in a milkshake here and there…. but…. everything in moderation… even Hershey Kisses (which I will always love!)!!

I’ve gotten wiser on how I make my food choices and I couldn’t be happier! Before I made my lifestyle change, my energy level felt drained and my arthritis gave me fits. For anyone who has arthritis, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I would wake up in the morning feeling stiff as a board. My lower back would hurt so much that it would bring tears to my eyes. Not to mention the random hip pains that would often cause me to limp some. My hands would lock up and ache… my knees would, on rare occasions, literally give out on me. I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 34, but knew I had it for a lot longer than that. As I got closer to 40, my pain and discomfort gradually got worse. Actually, to the point where it was starting to limit certain levels of mobility. I hid the pain, dealing with it the best way I could. In the beginning I tried pain medication, but quickly stopped because after reading all the ridiculous side effects, I decided that was not how I was going to live my life, taking pills on a daily basis. That may be for others, but definitely not me!

Then, last year when the nurse practitioner said that about my weight it made me start thinking, plus with my arthritis…. my body was controlling me, making me feel horrible and I wasn’t going to let that happen any longer. I finally woke up, listening to the things that my body had been trying to tell me for so long. That’s when I started taking control by eating healthier and incorporating exercise into my daily routine. Yes, I exercise every single day and I absolutely love it! Guess what?! That arthritis pain….. I kicked its ass!!! Yep, I said it! By me constantly being active, my arthritis pain has become extremely minimal. Every great once in a while it will remind me that it’s still there, but nothing in comparison to how it used to be!

I exercise in the comfort of my own home. I don’t have a gym membership. I have a core flex machine, some light weights, an ab wheel, an exercise stretch band and an exercise ball. I do a lot of sit-ups, push-ups, crunches, etc… I even incorporate isometric exercises along with yoga, and I also jog.

By eating healthier and being active, I feel soooooo much better now! Honestly, I feel better than I did even when I was in my twenties! I haven’t felt this great in decades!! And yes, I have lost 40 lbs., but I’m healthier and I continue to maintain my yearly check-up. My only regret about all this is that I didn’t do it years ago. But can’t dwell on that because everything happens for a reason. Carpe diem!!! 😉

I also minimized my diet soda intake. I used to drink 3 – 4 of those every day. I know they say “no calories”, but seriously… since I am down to only having one a day, I honestly believe that has helped my weight achieve a healthier goal as well. I have become addicted to fruit infused flavored water. I love going to the local markets and picking out fresh fruits and veggies so I can make my own infused water. Totally delicious with soooo many health benefits!! So far, one of my faves is a water that I add green apple, cucumber, mint leaves and lemon to. It’s so refreshing and smells divine!!

Ok, here’s the question… since I’m a vegetarian (and have been for 15 yrs), how do I get my protein? Well, a few years ago I used to be a plasma donor. Every time a person donates plasma, their protein and iron levels get checked. My levels were often higher than those of meat eaters. Why? Because I’ve always known the importance of that so I make sure to eat protein enriched foods. Peanut butter, beans… dairy… and I am also a huge fan of Morning Star products, which are low in fat, but are awesome with maintaining a great protein level. Also, protein shakes… yogurt…. (I’m getting hungry just thinking about it all!) You get the picture. lol

Together, my husband and I are both eating better so we can hopefully live long, healthier lives. So, for anyone who says, “It gets harder as you get older.” I say to that… Bullsnart! I was 41 when I made my lifestyle change and trust me, I’m extremely grateful I did it!

It’s up to us, people…. it only gets harder if we allow it!

Eat healthy, be active and stay motivated, my friends! Remember, life is meant to be enjoyed!!!

Spirits Are Everywhere!

Yep, that’s right! I firmly believe that.

Ever get a feeling that you’re being watched? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad or terrifying feeling, just one when you know that you’re alone, but still…. you look over your shoulder because you swear that someone is there watching you? We all get that feeling. I know that I do, my whole life. And no, I am not crazy. lol.  But I’ve always felt the presences of things. Ghosts, spirits, entities… whatever you want to call them, they are there. It’s not paranoia either. Trust me, I’m not paranoid about anything.

Ever since I can remember I’ve seen shadow people, been touched by spirits, heard and witnessed things, been visited by deceased loved ones in dreams, smelled odors and fragrances without any plausible explanation…. and so on, and so forth…. (not to mention how my “Angel Radio” is always on, but that’s another topic totally not related to ghosts, etc. My ability of angelic communication is on a different level all together for me.)

When I was a teenager, the house I lived in, I swear the presence of my deceased grandmother was felt on several occasions, and not just by me, but by others as well. Did that mean that our house was haunted? Definitely not! I never considered that, not for even a single moment.

A few years ago my husband and I, along with our younger son, lived in an apartment. My husband told me that he once saw a purple orb-like light there in one of the rooms. While living there I actually felt light touches, like a small child’s hand softly press against my arm. Did that mean that we feared that our apartment was haunted? No way!

And nearly four years ago we began the search to buy a home. Here’s the uncanny part…. my husband and I both looked at a listing of different homes, separately without looking at them together. We did this because we wanted to see if we were drawn to the same place without the influence of the other while looking. After we both made our choice, we showed each other which house we liked. Wanna know what? We both were drawn to the same exact house! The house was nearly twenty years old, had previous residents who obviously didn’t take proper care of the house and needed desperate painting in all the rooms throughout the brick home. It sat on almost a whole acre of land with lots of trees around it.

We decided to call our friend who’s a realtor so we could go look at the property located on the edge of town. As soon as we neared the address, right before pulling into the driveway, we started getting this intense feeling. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it was one where we literally felt like we were home, like it was speaking to us. I know that sounds insane, but it’s the truth. My husband and I felt so drawn to this house that we knew that we had to get it no matter what. It was a HUD home and a complete ass pain to get regardless of the fact that we were approved for the home’s mortgage. (Advice: if you are interested in purchasing a foreclosed home, be prepared to go through lots of red tape, just sayin’.)

Anyway, four months later we finally got the keys to our home and immediately started on the renovating. One day while my son and I were gone to school and work, my husband decided to take the day off so he could do some painting on the inside. When I got home he told me that he could feel a presence watching him from a corner in one of the rooms he was in. I then told him that I felt a presence there as well, an older female one. Also, I heard a male’s voice quietly say “Hey”  in my right ear when I was all by myself on the other side of the house. And since then, we continue to feel their presences, but nothing malevolent. We believe they’re simply observing us. Why? Who knows. Maybe because they’re curious… perhaps bored…. but whatever the reason is… we coexist. My husband and I respect the spirits.

Recently, my husband bought some paranormal investigative equipment so we can start conducting our own paranormal investigations. (Ever since we got back from visiting The Bellaire House, my husband has been pumped about wanting to start investigating the paranormal even more, which has me even more excited as well!!) So with that being said, with the new equipment, he and I decided to attempt communication with the spirits that we have felt in our home. We were given the names of Isabella and Bryce. Isabella is the presence of the older lady that we felt. She feels warm and caring and Bryce seems like “he’s just hanging out”. Nothing bad at all.

What equipment did we use while communicating with our spirits? A Spirit Box SB 11, 2 KII EMF Meters and a flashlight (for flashlight responses, which is actually my favorite technique, as simple as it is.)

Do we think our home is haunted? No, we don’t! Again, nothing malevolent has ever happened in our home. And as far as the spirits go, no one has ever died in the house. So, where did the spirits come from? Excellent question! But my point is this, for as long as the beautiful Earth has existed, and for as many people who have died since the beginning of time….. not all of them have crossed over to the “Great Beyond”. So, where are their spirits? I believe here…. all around us. Meaning that spirits are everywhere!!

Keep in mind, I am an empath. I would have very easily picked up on negative entities if any lurked around our home. I believe in using sage to help keep the property cleansed and I practice white magic. Also, I call upon my guides and angels for white light protection because I am extremely protective of my family. Like I always say, positive vibes only!

Protect. Project. & Promote all that is good and good will always come back to you!

“Spooky Random Fact: #17”

“Spooky Random Fact: #17”

Ok, everyone’s heard of Casper the Friendly Ghost, right? You know, the cute transparent guy who floats around through walls? If all the hauntings were as adorable as him, then that would be pretty amazing and all the little kiddies wouldn’t be so afraid of the things that go bump in the night.

Well, let’s take a step back and face reality here. Some hauntings can be pretty frightening and down right mind-numbing. Did you know that there are actually two known types of hauntings? Yes, intelligent and residual…

An intelligent haunting is when the spirits can interact with the living, a type of energy that DOES have consciousness. These spirits may find ways of communication much like the ways discussed in my previous blog titled, The Afterlife ~ A Corporeal’s Transition, or the spirits can often communicate through the use of a voice box; a tool that is used to collect electronic voice phenomena (EVPs)……….

The second type of haunting is known as a residual haunting. It’s more like a supernatural experience that resembles a recording of past energy. For instance, like hearing footsteps walking down an empty hallway when no one is there. It’s believed that in a location where someone has released a large amount of energy or heightened emotions were experienced and the energy attaches or “imprints” itself. As a result of the abiding energy, individuals in the future may get to experience seeing a type of “recording” of these events. Some signs of a residual haunting may be the absence of interaction from the spirit. As if the spirit doesn’t acknowledge the presence of the living person. The spirit will almost seem totally oblivious to anything that’s occurring in it’s presence.

I’ve actually encountered both. Read more at Intelligent & Residual Hauntings: What Are They?

“Light Will Always Prevail”

Even when it’s cloudy the sun continues to shine.

Clouds cover the sky on a humid summer day, passing by with their random forms and patterns. And yet, beaming high above, the sun radiates its rays for all to see. Just witnessing this was so awe inspiring to me. Why? Because I saw it as a beautiful reminder that regardless of what we go through in life, light will always prevail.

Writing about and researching the paranormal, there’s always talk about the darkness and shadows. But what we have to remember is that regardless of how dim things may get, they cannot exist without the Light. There is a magnificent balance between the two. As I always say, “I love the Light as much as I love the Dark. It’s such a beautiful balance.” And I sincerely mean that.

We all go through our moments, good and bad. It’s up to us on how we perceive things. Remember, a positive mindset can do a world of wonders.

I’ve often been asked, “Sheila, how are you always so positive?” Well, the truth is… I’m not. I have my moments just like anyone else does. For example: when something happens and it absolutely irks me, I’ll be like “OMG, seriously?!?!” And trust me, I’ll say a couple of “choice words” about it, but then I have to remind myself to just let it go. Whatever it is, does not have power over me. I have power over me. I am in control of my life and whatever happens, whether it’s good or bad, is because it is meant to happen. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. We are never given more than what we can handle. But again, it is based on our perception on how we see things. Do we accept things as a lesson that will help us to grow and become stronger, better individuals or will we let things drag us down and consume us? We can either accept things constructively or destructively, the choice is ours. If we choose constructively, then we can embrace the experience as a lesson that will teach us to be wiser with a more positive outlook. However, if we choose destructively, we do so with a negative mindset, therefore becoming cold and bitter towards the situation. Subsequently, allowing the latter to control us. I repeat, the choice is ours. Constructively or destructively. Positive or negative. A positive life brings forth strength and happiness while a negative life results in weakness and misery.

When I was younger, I was actually more negative than positive. I would often look at things with a scowled look on my face, angry and wrapped up in my own little world. I would let things control me and still question, “why?”. And then one day I woke up. A co-worker once told me that no matter how some people may try to bring us down, we should always smile at them. I questioned her reasoning and she replied, “Because if you let them get the best of you, then they win. And if you do that, you let that person have power over you. But, by smiling at them, regardless of how hard they try to be rude, you let that individual know that they can’t control you.”

It may sound like simple advice, but I have carried that with me for twenty years and the older I get, the more it makes sense. I guess with age comes wisdom? Whatever it is, it continues to resonate with me and I find myself sharing my former co-worker’s advice quite often. (If you’re wondering what I used to do, I worked for a law firm serving subpoenas for a living and would often get a lot of attitude from people when I served them. Even though it wasn’t my fault why they were being subpoenaed to court, I was the middle person and the one who they hated. I must admit, the job did help me develop a tough skin, though.)

Keep in mind when you encounter someone who’s having a bad day, remember this….. don’t take it personally. And if you can, help them have a better day. Even if you just give them a smile. You may not think they deserve it, but I promise you, the simple gesture of a smile can brighten someone’s day more than you know. It can literally speak volumes. Pay it forward! Also by doing so, you continue to help yourself grow by incorporating a positive life into your daily routine. Your positive light can be the seed that manifests brightness into the world. How amazing is that, right?! You are a beautiful beacon of radiance! You glow and so does your magical smile! 🙂

Keep shining, my most awesome friends!

“My Phantom Traveler”

“Darling, Darkness, lover of mine, with my bite I’ll drink your wine. Pierce thy flesh beneath the skin and allow the flow of your sweet crimson.” ~ Sheila Renee Parker

People call it, “Land beyond the hills.”, but not me. I call it home. Sona, Romania is where my family has lived for generations. Some as traders, some as farmers, and then there’s my father. He’s a dignitary who answers to the King. As far as my mother goes, I never got to meet her. She died during childbirth. The day I was born was the last day she took breath. My father still speaks of her often, fondly with tears in his eyes. Even though it’s been nineteen years, I know that his heart continues to beat only for her.

The evening was filled with a dusk colored sky as the sun slowly vanished behind the trees. In my carriage, I was on route to pick up my father from the castle where he was discussing politics with the King. I’ve always found the meetings to be rather boring, so every time he attended was when I’d have our driver take me out for a ride.

The air was damp from the late afternoon rain and the carriage’s wooden wheels jolted with every mud puddle they splashed. The atmosphere was soggy, and yet, there was still a certain calmness that I felt to be quite serene.

As we trailed through the woods, nearing the village, just up the distance was a figure walking ahead to the side of the road. With my parasol I knocked on the ceiling of the carriage to tell the driver to stop. My curiosity was oddly drawn to this peculiar character wearing a dirty brown, hooded robe that dragged the earth with each step that he took. It was stained with mud from the feet up. However filthy as he was, there was something undeniably alluring about this strange man.

I called out to him as the horses were coming to a stop.  “Need a ride?”

He didn’t respond and for some odd reason that bothered me.

“You, peasant!” I forcefully spoke, demanding his response.

Obviously, I had struck a nerve because he came to a halt. His pose stiffened as he raised his head, turning his face in my direction. Through the long, fallen hair in his eyes, and just past the edge of his hood, he looked at me with a savage glare in his eyes.

“What do you want?”  He growled.

“I….. I…..” I stammered to speak for he caught me off guard with his harshness.

“Ah… now you can’t speak.” He grinned heinously.

“Ma’am?” The driver interrupted. “We must be going. You’re father…”

I hushed the driver to stop and pleaded for another moment.

“Mustn’t keep your father waiting.” Toyed the hooded one.

I froze, couldn’t understand what I was doing. Normally I would have never stopped for a complete stranger, especially one so unkempt and impudent, but there was something about him that made me extremely inquisitive and I had to find out why.

“Get in!” I demanded. “We’re heading in that direction and you appear to need a ride.”

“Well, my feet are worn and I have grown tired.” He mumbled.

Without saying another word I opened the carriage door and motioned for him to come inside. He hesitated, then gathered his composure. While taking the seat across from me I warned him to keep his distance. His gaze began at my feet and his eyes eerily went all the way up my body to meet mine. He slightly shook his head as he grinned, “Can’t make any promises.”

“I’m warning you!” I urged.

“Relax.” The hooded vagrant said. There was an uneasy calm that immediately overcame me as he continued to speak. “Now, tell your driver to drive.”

Quietly, I obeyed his command and knocked on the ceiling of the carriage to do so. Suddenly, it was as if this bizarre character was in charge of me and I was no longer in control. What just happened? One minute I felt strong and then the next, I felt completely powerless.

“What’s your name?” He asked while making sure to keep his eyes locked onto mine. It was making me feel uncomfortable and regretting picking him up.

“Your name?” He asked again. His eyes darkened as they bore deeper into my soul.

“Angelika.” My lips whispered cautiously. I slowly pressed my back firmly against my seat, an attempt to get far enough away from him as I possibly could. He immediately took notice of my move and snickered. His eyes continued to stare into mine as if he were trying to figure me out, read me like an unwritten script.

And then….. “Ahhh….. “ a malefic grin stretched across his face. “Like an angel.”

“Pardon me?” I quickly responded.

This nasty, foul person leaned towards me and callously continued. “Ha! Your name. It means ‘like an angel’. Ironic, don’t you think?”

“What do you mean?” I snarled, advancing his lean with the same inconsiderate attitude he was giving me.

His harsh breath filled my nostrils and I could literally feel every word that he spoke on my face. “You. Me. Together in this moment. An angel and I.” He laughed. “It amuses me.”

“I’m far from being an angel.” I protested abruptly.

“Ha! Of course you are.” He added while leaning back into his seat.

Suddenly, the moment grew quiet and still with a sense of wickedness that I couldn’t overcome.

“Should you tell your driver to stop and let me off?” He quietly mouthed while watching the trees as we passed them by.

“No.” Was all I could reply. It was as if however vile this rugged character was, I didn’t want him to leave. His presence was captivating and I wanted him near. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. His hair was long and dark with a certain wave about it. The straggly whiskers on his face concealed an age that I couldn’t quite collect, but that didn’t stop my inquisitiveness about him.

“Why are you looking at me?” He asked while staring out the window.

“What? I’m not.” I was too embarrassed to be honest with my response, so I sheepishly looked down at my dress, pretending to brush off road dust that obviously wasn’t there.

“Your eyes, I can feel them on me.” He smiled, slowly turning his head in my direction.

“No.” I quickly interjected, but before I could speak any further, he was across the carriage leaning his brute body into mine. Through his robe I could feel his chest muscles press against my bosom.

“You like that, don’t you?” He smiled gloriously like a victor claiming his prize.

With all my will I wanted to deny his advance, but was well aware that I physically wouldn’t be able to. He towered over me, conquering my every rejection.

“You can’t resist me.” The words whispered from his icy lips as they lingered down my neck. His breath became cold like death and yet, I still wanted him more.

I shivered from his touch. “Please!” I begged.

“Please, what? Stop?” He looked into my eyes with an enraptured darkness that continued to lure me in.

“Or would you like for me to…..?” His kissing persisted as his hands began to explore my body. He unlaced my bodice, exposing the skin beneath my dress. I had become utterly vulnerable to him as he proclaimed my innocence. He penetrated me, taking what I could no longer take back, and I loved it, every sensual moment of it! He made me feel things I had never felt before. A defeated fear that had completely disappeared. He replaced it with a voracious need that made me desire more. My legs wrapped around his waist, inviting him even deeper into me. Without hesitation he quickly obliged, causing me to moan uncontrollably.

The driver apparently heard us because he called out. “Ma’am, is everything all right?”

“Faster!” I screamed in ecstasy.

“Keep going!” My bearded flame demanded the driver.

We could feel our carriage gathering speed which only intensified the atmosphere. Our mood became more fierce, more sensual and totally adulterated. His carnal spell had me undoubtedly under his control and we were making love like two wild beasts. It was erotic in every sense of the word.

His kisses became harder and more fervent. I could feel the sharpness of his teeth as he nibbled my neck. There was pain, slightly, but with an invitation that tingled with anticipation. I gladly exposed my neck even more, welcoming him to take me.

With his deep voice he softly spoke. “Darling, Darkness, lover of mine, with my bite I’ll drink your wine. Pierce thy flesh beneath the skin and allow the flow of your sweet crimson.”

And it was in that exact, beautiful moment that I could feel my old life end and a new one begin. Confidence, elegance and even arrogance brought on with strength, wisdom and power was immediately bestowed upon me. Was I still under his spell or were my eyes finally opened to a reality unveiled? What had this stranger done to me?

I looked deep into his eyes for answers. “Who are you?” I begged to know.

With a charming smile he replied. “To some a monster, to many a prince, but to you, my love…. “ He quietly paused. “I am Vlad.”

I gasped in disbelief. And just like that he was gone, vanished from the presence before me. His hooded robe, his smell, his very essence were all gone within an instant. I sat there in that vacant moment, clutching my disheveled dress, questioning the mere validity of my sanity. Was it all simply a dream? I quivered at the thought.

We drove a ways down the road. The streets were becoming brighter as the light from the lanterns illuminated the impending night. We were entering the village where my father was. When we arrived at the castle, the carriage came to a stop and I found myself not being able to move. I sat there with my head against the seat, asking myself, “Did I really spend the evening with a man named Vlad?” And if so, how did he vanish into thin air?

Then I thought, “Vlad the Impaler?! Prince of Darkness?!” But that was impossible because he died almost a century ago and the legend of him being a vampire was merely just that…. a legend. Right?!

The driver opening the carriage door suddenly broke my confused concentration. “Ma’am?”

“Huh? Ah, yes.” I quietly said while taking his hand as he lead me outside.

“Where’s the gentleman that we picked up?” He asked, looking throughout the carriage.

I couldn’t answer him. All I could do was shake my head while stumbling for the words.

Then, the immediate shock on the driver’s face as he looked at me. His eyes trembled with fear. “Your neck!”

“What do you mean?” I asked him while reaching for my neck with my left hand. It was wet and warm. Puzzled, I looked down at my fingertips. They were covered with blood, my blood. I could feel the bite mark where my dark lover had bitten me. I smiled because that was the confirmation that I needed for it wasn’t just a dream, it was definitely a reality. A beguiling one shared intimately with my phantom traveler.

“Spooky Random Fact: #16”

“Spooky Random Fact: #16”

Do you have a fear of ghosts, anything ghoulish that goes bump in the night and causes fright?

Well, if you do, then don’t worry because millions of others do, too. It’s a very common fear known as “phasmophobia”. The word “phasmos” derives from the Greek language referring to “phantom” or “supernatural being”. It’s also known as “spectrophobia”. “Spectrum” is Latin referring to a specter, or an image of a thing, or an apparition.

Symptoms of phasmobia can typically be found in most disorders that lead to anxiety. A sufferer can go through feelings of dread, rapid heartbeat, panic attacks, also nausea and severe vomiting. It’s even been reported that a person suffering from phasmosphobia can develop OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in order to conduct rituals to negate any kind of ghostly presence.

Is there treatment for such a phobia? Read more at Phasmophobia: A Ghostly Fear
