Automatic Writing

What is this mysterious form of writing and why are some so enraptured by it while others find it insidious? The practice of automatic writing (a.k.a. psychography) is a supernatural ability used by many individuals to communicate with spirits.

Often a person will sit in a trance-like state with a small chalkboard and a piece of chalk. While channeling, the individual allows the spirit to communicate through them. The person will transcribe the spirit’s message onto the chalkboard. This can also be done with the use of pen and paper. The individual, through which the spirit is communicating, claims to have no control over what’s being written, claiming that the spirit is in total control.

The mere thought of doing such an act frightens many people because of the idea of spirits entering (even if it’s for a brief period of time) a person’s body. They fear the possibility of a spiritual attachment. The use of a Ouija Board has also been considered a form of automatic writing.

A well-known case of automatic writing comes from the nineteenth century. New York Supreme Court Judge, John Worth Edmonds didn’t express any interest in automatic writing until after the passing of his wife. Even though Judge Edmonds put his career on the line, that didn’t stop him from pursuing communication with the spiritual world. Along with the help from his spiritualist friends, the judge claimed to have communicated with both historic figures, Francis Bacon (who was England’s Lord Chancellor that died in the seventeenth century) and Emanuel Swedenborg (who was an established philosopher from Sweden that died in the eighteenth century). However popular this study is, there still is no scientific evidence that proves such theory.

But just in case such ability does exist, I recommend using extreme caution to anyone who considers performing automatic writing. In my opinion, like with the use of a Ouija Board, it may not be that easily discernible with whom one is communicating. So be careful and know that it is not a game.

My Aversion with the Ouija Board

More than two decades have passed since the night I played with the infamous Ouija Board. Thinking back, not really sure what was going through my head and what prompted me to attempt such nefarious communication. Perhaps the notion could have been given credit due to the thought of innocent play, but after witnessing a few things, there was nothing innocent proven about it.

It was at night and I was with two others. We were just three teenagers looking for something to do and there were no adults around. So, we lit some candles in the room we were in and also in the room next to us. The atmosphere was all aglow with amber lighting as we readied the spirit board. Once the planchette was placed, we silenced our speech and cleared our minds. With our fingers on the communicative tool, we asked our first question, “is there anyone here?”. Moments passed and nothing happened. We were patient and asked again. That’s when the planchette moved. Even though the movement was slight, it was still quite detected. Of course, we asked each other who was causing the action, but we all vowed that we weren’t responsible.

The room was beginning to feel a bit tense, but we decided to continue. We asked a few more questions like, “who are you?” and “when did you die?”…. the typical questions of curiosity. What we got in response seemed innocent enough. We were told that the spirit was a female who had died many years prior in a train wreck. That’s when I started to feel uneasy because we were at home, way out in the country and there weren’t any train tracks around for many miles.

Then, we asked if the spirit was there to cause us any harm and we were told “no”. After that, we proceeded to ask if the spirit ever thought about coming back as a living person in the form of reincarnation. It replied that it already had done that, meaning that it had already been reborn.

Our hearts raced and the looks on our faces were of shock and confusion, but we continued by asking “who have you been reincarnated into?” It answered with the name of an individual with whom I hold very, very dear…. someone that I knew in fact had not been inhabited by the spirit. We questioned the spirit on how it could have been reincarnated as someone we knew among the living, if they were communicating with us by use of the Ouija Board. A long, awkward pause lingered. There was no response through the planchette, but a candle that was sitting very securely in the center of a table in the next room, all of a sudden fell over, making a loud noise. There was no explanation to how the candle could have fallen because we were all three hovering over the spirit board and there was no one else in the house.

As frightened as we were, we asked the spirit one last question, “did you cause the candle to fall over?” It’s reply was, “yes”.

Immediately, we stopped playing with the Ouija Board and quickly put it away. The remainder of the night we stayed wide awake, too scared to sleep. To this day I don’t know what ever happened to that Ouija Board and I don’t really care, but I do know one thing for certain and that is…… I will never mess with a spirit board ever again.

“The Portal”

“The Portal” ~ by Sheila Renee Parker

One, two….. the Demon’s waiting for you.

Three, four….. inside the Ouija Board.

Five, six…. to play his evil tricks.

Seven, eight….. away from Heaven’s gate.

Nine, ten…. don’t let the bastard win. .

Ouija Boards, or any kind of spirit boards for that matter, are something that many of you know that I am strongly against. I wish that toy companies wouldn’t market and distribute them as mere play things. Misinformed people so often think that there’s nothing to it, that it’s “all just a game”. Oh, how wrong they are……

Here’s a poem that I wrote based on my own experience with the nefarious Ouija. It’s been a while since I shared it with you, hope you enjoy reading it! And please, if any of you have had any kind of experience with spirit boards, don’t be afraid to share. Would love to hear about it!

“A Board Known As The Ouija” ~ by Sheila Renee Parker

The night was calm, dark and still. To this day, I remember it extremely well. However, many a year ago, it was a Saturday, a horror story of bold. Two other girls and I, together we were three, collected around a board known as the Ouija. Slowly, we placed our fingertips upon a small piece of wood called the planchette, dreading impending moments of regret, with fears of memories we wouldn’t forget.

With bated breath we deeply inhaled, then proceeded to ask things in great detail. For with the hereafter we wanted to converse, in a series of questions that were unrehearsed, like “is there anyone here?” and “how did you die?”. Then seconds later we got a reply. As scary as it was we were told “yes”. One simple word that made us become speechless. For we weren’t the ones who had replied, it was quite obvious by the fear in our eyes.

We continued with questions of more and we were answered with terror galore. With whom we had reached from the other side, was trying to come through with nothing to hide. Their answers were clear and their actions then too, for they were knocking over candles in the adjoining room. A room unoccupied with only a dim glow except for the entity’s unwanted show. Their presence was felt with heavy intent and we three girls were starting to resent unleashing this darkness that wasn’t fervent.

We stopped that night all due to fright and quickly put the board away locked up and tight. Our hearts raced without skipping a beat from what we had just witnessed that made the facts concrete. And even though it’s been so many years since that night with the swelling of tears, never again in front of me has there ever been another board known as the Ouija.

“Spooky Random Fact: #13”

“Spooky Random Fact: #13”

“Yes”… “No”…. The spirits will tell you so, or do they really even know?

The Spirit Board, more commonly known as the Ouija Board, actually is based from the American 19th century obsession with spiritualism which is the belief that the deceased can communicate with the living and vice versa. On a scary note, many people believe that by using a Ouija Board, one can open doors leading into the gates of Hell, allowing demonic beings into our own world. After people use the board, several report hearing strange noises, seeing dark shadows, witnessing objects move mysteriously without reason and some extreme cases even claim experiencing possession from what they believe they brought through the “portal” or “opening” of the Ouija Board.

It’s not just a game. Once you’ve played with one, your life may never be the same. For you’ve been forewarned, what lies beyond the ghostly door shouldn’t be opened with a Ouija Board.

“A New Look with a Few Spooks”

Hey all you ghosts and ghouls, beautiful people, lightworkers and such! Wow, that was quite the diverse greeting, wasn’t it?!

It has been nearly four fantabulous years (June to be a tad more precise 😉 ) since the creation of my site and I thought it was time for a change, one that’s been way overdue. As you can see, there’s a kickass new header image (designed by a very dear friend), shadowed by an adorable black, Gothic background adorned with skulls. And I’ve added a few more pages that were once written articles by me. I decided to upgrade the articles to having their own pages to help encourage people to openly discuss their very own personal paranormal experiences and more. So, I gladly welcome everyone’e interactions with an open mind and open arms.

My site here, sheilareneeparker.com, is non-judgemental and is free of all negativity. As I always say, “Positive Vibes Only”, baby!

Also, just for a little added creepiness, periodically I will be posting on here “Spooky Random Facts @ sheilareneeparker.com” to help sharpen the senses about things that “go bump in the night”. So, stay tuned and join in. Let’s have some spooky fun! I’ll try to keep things at a moderate level, not causing too much fright…. and I’ll even promise not to bite…. well, maybe just a little nibble. A girl’s gotta feed sometime, right?! 😉

A Grave Attraction

Hmmm…. The fascination of cemeteries, graves, headstones, gargoyles…. etc. etc…. To many, they are quite attracted to such places. Why? Well, to me (and yes, I am one of those who find these macabre locations to be rather intriguing.) there’s something serene about the atmosphere. I am at such peace when I am at a cemetery. Which, if one truly thinks about it, should be comforting to know that the dead are “resting in peace”. After all, I am an empath and can feel the deceased’s energy. 😉

Now that’s not to say that nefarious beings don’t lurk around in these places. All I’m saying is that I am never afraid while I’m in a cemetery. And then again, I’m always saying “no fear” when I publicly talk about the supernatural. Only because I faced my fears of the paranormal many years ago (from seeing shadow people to having a horrible Ouija Board experience), which is why I no longer am afraid. And I honestly believe that the main reason why I am not afraid of graveyards, is because that was actually the first location I had anything otherworldly happen to me. Previously, I wrote an article about it titled, “My First Paranormal Experience”. I was a very small child, and even though I was as young as I was, the experience was extremely comforting to me. I was so fascinated by it that it has always remained with me after all these years.

Getting back to the morbid curiosity of cemeteries. There is actually a name for this referred to as coimetromania. According to an online definition, it’s simply defined as “An abnormal attraction to and desire to visit cemeteries.” There are many, many people with this interest. And I’m sure that with each individual, their reasoning is just as unique as they are.

Just like those who love the final resting places of our beloved, there are many, many people who are terrified by cemeteries. Those who have this fear have coimetrophobia, which is referred to as “The abnormal and persistent fear of cemeteries.” Three years ago I wrote an article about this phobia titled, “A Grave Fear”. As much as I love graveyards, I personally do know some people who won’t even go near the places. And that in itself I find interesting… how people can be from one extreme to the other. Guess it’s all in part of how we as individuals can be as remarkable as we are!

I’m interested in how you feel about the topic? Are you intrigued by coimetromania or do you suffer from coimetrophobia? Or are you indifferent about it? I’d love to hear what you think!!
