“Swinging back and forth, to and fro, which way will the pendulum go?”

According to Wikipedia’s definition, “a pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely.” From the early 1700s to the early 1900s, pendulums were used for timekeeping and considered to be extremely accurate. But this scientific method is not the reasoning behind me writing this article. No, my reference is in the spiritual sense.

Many people use pendulums for a variety of reasons such as a form of communication with spirit guides and/or spirits in general. Others may use pendulums to access wisdom from a higher self or to even perhaps gain forgotten knowledge from the subconscious mind. The reasoning for each individual’s use is as unique as the person using it. And the practice in which they perform may vary as well.

Like me for instance, I actually have a pendulum. Several years ago I put one together with extreme simplicity. (And yes, it’s ok to make your own pendulum. Manufactured ones work just as well, but my preference was to make my own. I believe that spirituality is quite beautiful and personal, so creating my pendulum made it all the more sentimental.)

Again, simple materials… actually, I only purchased a couple of things. One was a small rope-like thick string (a pretty, light green color) and the second item I got was a crescent shaped, aurora borealis pendant to use as the weight. I strung the string through a premade hole in the pendant and voila, my pendulum was made. Of course, I cleansed it with the practice of incense prior to use. I am extremely cautious with what I do and I never do anything that promotes negativity. I believe in practicing with white light protection and the assistance from spirit guides.
